I'm a historian. My PhD is from the University of Manchester (the first person to find my thesis online and ask an obscure question gets a thumbs up), and now I'm an independent scholar looking to bring good quality knowledge and analysis to all you lovely people.
I've got three projects running at the moment: my YouTube channel, which shows you the old origins of modern thinking/problems; The Material City, an environmental history project exploring the materiality of urban spaces; and a low-key ongoing interest in how nineteenth century archaeologists wrote about Indian megaliths (a haunting from my postgrad days).
I watch too many films, I read too much nonsense, and I post too many memes. Sometimes I do some writing. Occasionally I give talks. Find me in an alley with a camera or quietly scheming in a corner.
I am definitely not a gang of ambitious jackdaws in a human suit.
Video essays on the misuse of the past, nationalism, the old origins of modern problems, the folly of man, and much more. Production time varies- I'm a perfectionist and my essays are long.
Find out why I have bits of Manchester in jars. This project is the theory behind urban grunge and an interesting take on environmental history. It's also an excuse for me to lurk where I probably shouldn't.
This doesn't have a catchy name yet. It was only a small part of my PhD thesis, but I want to see what I can do with it. Check it out for nineteenth century archaeology vibes.
I will give a talk to your group or organisation. This is a threat. I've done it before. Get in touch.
Want to get in touch without reading the rest of the website? Good for you. Contact for potential collaborations, speaking engagements, or to ask me awkward questions about my research.
This is an exploration of the viscera of Manchester, a look at the innards of our city spaces, and a gradual accumulation of urban fragments. It is also stuff in jars. The Material City project is an ode to the ingredients of Manchester's physical presence and how these ingredients come together to create urban space. The Museum of the Material City is the tangible manifestation of this.
